Study Finds Lake Elsinore, Wildomar Lag In Tobacco Control

The report card issued by the American Lung Association has given advocates of the California Cancer Research Act more ammunition to push for passage of an increase on the state’s tobacco tax.

The American Lung Association in California took a hard stance against Lake Elsinore and Wildomar in its recent annual report, State of Tobacco Control 2012 – California Local Grades.

The report issues grades to all cities and counties in California on local tobacco control policies, including those for smoke-free outdoor environments, smoke-free housing, and reducing sales of tobacco products.

In the report issued this month, Lake Elsinore received an overall grade of D and Wildomar a C. In contrast, Murrieta received an overall grade of B, and Temecula an A. To view the complete report, click on the attached PDF.

Both Lake Elsinore and Wildomar received the same grades in the American Lung Association in California’s 2011 report. Click here to read that story.

California was “once a national leader in tobacco control policies,” but now the state’s efforts are lagging, the report finds. California received an F for failing to adequately fund tobacco prevention and control programs and a D for its low cigarette tax. California currently ranks 33rd among the 50 states and the District of Columbia for its $0.87 per pack tax, far below the national average of $1.46. While California earned an A for smoke-free air policies, the state received another F for poor coverage of smoking cessation and treatment service.

The American Lung Association in California used the findings to advocate for passage of the California Cancer Research Act on the June 2012 ballot, which would, if approved by voters, increase the state’s tobacco tax by $1 per pack of cigarettes. Revenues derived from the increased tax would be directed to the treatment, prevention and, ultimately, cures for lung disease, heart disease and stroke, cancer and other tobacco-related illnesses, according to the measure’s supporters. The measure also would triple state funding for tobacco prevention and cessation efforts, the supporters contend.

“Now is the time for California to raise the grade,” said Jane Warner, president and CEO, American Lung Association in California. “The California Cancer Research Act is an historic opportunity for California voters to provide more than $855 million annually to fund research for cancer and other tobacco-related diseases as well as proven tobacco prevention, education, and law enforcement efforts which will prevent 228,700 kids in California from becoming addicted smokers.”

The California Cancer Research Act is strongly supported by the American Lung Association in California, the American Cancer Society, and the American Heart Association. More information can be found at www.californiansforacure.org.

I for one am thankful for Lake Elsinore and Wildomar's 'lag.' I do not smoke tobacco products. However, I appreciate these cities for not infringing the choice of people through legislation. Not smoking is a great suggestion, but it should not be legislated. Legislation strips freedom from us all.

What happens when everyone quits and there is no more tax money collected.

another reason to waste time and tax dollars. if they want to smoke, they will. try using the time to do something more constructive like, catching drug dealers, taggers who destroy others property, or maybe even robbers and burglars.. ooh !! theres a thought !! setting up "sting s' to catch stores for selling tobacco to minors is FAR MORE IMPORTANT than arresting the people who are buying MORE booze when they're already drunk.... then they get to drive home to drink some more... yea , theres a good choice.... smokes or booze ? hhhmmmmmmm ?

If in deed the money collected by the American Cancer and American Lung Association were actually used to find a cure for cancer then so be it, however I don't think that the controling parties will ever "release" a cure for cancer. It is a multi trillion dollar business that they all work hand in hand with the doctors, Hospitals, and pharmacutical companies all get rich off of. How about throwing some research dollars in the contaminated food and meat that is full of preservatives that "cause cancer", probably more so then cigarettes and food products are controlled by the FDA which also works hand in hand with all the other money makers I have already mentioned. People die everyday of cancer and heart disease most of then never smoked a day in there life, our food is more damaging to our bodies then cigarette smoke could ever be. USA is the only country with the highest rates of cancer, heart disease, diabeities, and obesity, it is the food that is killing us not cigarettes. This is nothing more then another stupid ploy to throw a tax out and go after the smokers again. I vote "NO".

Yet in another comment you wrote:

"there will never, ever be anyone in my place of business that is under the influence of pot or any other mind altering drug, not now, not ever, no matter how many of these idiots tell me I have to, it's still MY business."

"Nicotine is the ingredient in tobacco that causes changes to the brain and behavior. Tobacco, a broad-leafed plant that originated in the Americas, is one of the most widely abused psychoactive, or mind-altering, substances in the world."

When you live in a glass house, don't throw stones Diana. ;)

You can take back everything you have said about pot and potheads now, if you wish to maintain any credibility.

Liberals can take their phony concern for my health and shove it. They wreck the system then cry out as champions to fix it. Just like they do with everything :(

diana-- no one can make you let anyone into your business. especially if you can see that they are high or drunk or whatever..i wont let them into mine either. causes too many issues with a lack of them understanding english and then wanting to argue when they're too screwed up to even speak right.. when did this issue become about pot anyway ? its about the cheap tactics and wasted tax dollars used to bend the small business owners over when in fact , any one wanting to smoke tobacco, will.. and at no time have they ever been able to stop it buy shutting down or fining the business owner.. they just go somewhere else... teach them , hope they listen, and move on.... this is not brain surgery.... common sense.

Bud: "there will never, ever be anyone in my place of business that is under the influence of pot or any other mind altering drug, not now, not ever, no matter how many of these idiots tell me I have to, it's still MY business." Still true to my quote, i've never seen anyone experience a "brain, behavioral", moment when smoking a cigarette, are you kidding me............really you are grasping here!!

Bud you are so right I must confess I am an addict, i'm addicted to life, God, my grandchildren, my Son, friends, and my Man. Some times this addiction is so consuming I just can't get enough and I find myself waking up everyday wanting more and more, I can't seem to help myself.

haahahahaaa.. youre a funny guy.... ok.. lets try this.. ( you must have missed it on some of the other comments made about the use of medical marijuana that i have made) when a person NEEDS to have it, its ok with me.. i dont care... i DO care when i have watched and talked to some of these people to claim to have injuries, problems and pains that they need weed for.....in fact , its all bull sh*t ! they could not make an accurate claim other than the famous remark; "dude, why not . i got my card ?" with this being said i will go out on limb here and repeat myself once again... i dont care if you NEED IT... be able to prove it !!! as far as the tobacco issue, youre 100% correct. there is nothing good about it. not for you , to you or in you.. but, its not illegal to have it , smoke it or choke on it. im sure at one point in time, some one told you ; "dont do drugs, dont smoke cigarettes" and you did it anyway.. wasting tax dollars and time on this over the past 40 years has proved to be nothing more than what i said it is--a waste of time... there you go...
