Annual Barbecue Competition Draws Thousands To Wildomar

The fourth-annual barbecue cook-off in Wildomar brought competitors near and far.

The Barbecue State Championship and People’s Choice Tastings took place Saturday at the County Transportation yard, a new and—hopefully—permanent location.

“This is a great location. Plenty of parking and beautiful scenery,” said Bridgette Moore, spokeswoman for the event.

Henry Silvestre, president of the Rotary Club from 2011 to 2012, concurred.

“We had about 7,000 (people) last year,” Silvestre said.

The Wildomar club organizes the annual event, with the help of sponsorships from various companies and utilities.

The event was judged by Kansas City Barbeque Society rules. Unlike Texas barbecue, which involves digging pits and burning wood overnight, competitors used smokers. Though anyone can barbecue at the event—teams are not required to be certified by the KCBS—all must follow the KCBS rules.

Along with the contest, live music, a kids’ play area and wine and a beer garden kept those in attendance occupied.

Locally, funds raised are used to buy dictionaries for third-graders.

Local merchants also benefit from the teams that come into the community and buy goods for their entries.

Silvestre explains more about the event and new location in the attached video.
