Inauguration Rental Prices Reach $10,000

Locals willing to rent their houses list exorbitant prices online.

While a significantly lower number of people (according to a WJLA report) are expected to visit Washington, DC, for President Obama's second inauguration on Jan. 21, hundreds of local residents have offered their houses, apartments and condos for rent, with some rentals priced as high as $10,000 for a rental starting Friday, Jan. 18, and ending Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Craigslist featured more than 100 inauguration listings on Thursday morning, Jan. 10. The listings were found by searching for the term "inauguration" under the "apts/housing for rent" section.

One Capitol Hill resident is seeking $10,000 for a three-bedroom, two-full bath, fully-furnished 1,500-square-foot town home, with payment by cashier's check required upfront.

By comparison, a seven-bedroom, 6,000-square-foot "luxurious mansion" on Keamy Street in Northeast Washington, DC, seems like a bargain at $6,500. This listing includes a gourmet kitchen, new deck, on-site parking and fireplace, and welcomes cats and dogs.

In Maryland, an Eastern Shore couple hopes to rent a master bedroom for the week surrounding the inauguration for $3,500. The price includes full use of the kitchen, gas fireplace, cable TV, wi-fi, complimentary continental breakfast with use of a Keurig coffee machine and turn-down service.

A listing in North Bethesda offers a one-bedroom apartment just three minutes from the White Flint Metro station for $1,200 for a four-day stay. Amenities include a queen-size bed, bathtub and kitchen.

On the Airbnb website, dozens of listings offer inauguration rentals as well.

A rowhouse in Columbia Heights boasts three bedrooms, two and one-half bathrooms and a few amenities for only $2,038 per night.

You could also try an 1890s stone townhouse with a "Democratic soul," conveniently located on Lincoln Park and which sleeps six for $8,000 for a four-night rental with a $1,000 security/damage deposit.
