Records Are Broken as Heat Bakes Lake Elsinore, Wildomar

An excessive heat warning lived up to its billing in the Inland Empire, as several cities in the region were hit with record high temperatures for today's date. 

National Weather Service officials reported record highs for June 29 in Riverside, Palm Springs, Lake Elsinore, Indio and Idyllwild.

Here is a list of those cities, with today's record highs and the previous highs and year they happened:

  • Palm Springs, 122 degrees. The old record, 121 degrees, June 29, 1994
  • Thermal, 122. Old record, 118 in 1994
  • Indio, 121. Old record, 117 in 1994
  • Lake Elsinore, 111. Old record 110 in 1972
  • Riverside, 105. Old record, 104 in 1996
  • Idyllwild, 98. Old record, 96 in 1972

The NWS has scheduled the warning to last through 8 p.m. Sunday, saying highs in the Coachella Valley will range from 117 to 122 degrees and highs in the mountains will be from 100 to 105 degrees.

A gradual cooling is expected for the valleys and mountains on Monday and Tuesday, but the excessive heat may continue for the deserts into Monday, according to the weather service.
