UPDATED: Asphalt Hauler Crashes On 15 Freeway

Traffic is jammed on the southbound side of the freeway through Wildomar, but no lanes are blocked.

UPDATED AT 9:48 a.m.: A tire blow out on an asphalt-hauling truck is to blame for Tuesday's crash on the 15 Freeway in Murrieta, according to a sergeant with the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at 7:52 a.m. on the southbound side of the freeway near California Oaks Road.

The Peterbilt Super 10 hauler experienced a blow out while heading southbound, veered toward the center median, struck an Acura Integra and the freeway guardrail, overturned, then landed upright in the center divide, according to CHP Sgt. Richard Fuentes.

American Medical Response ambulance transported both drivers to Inland Valley Medical Center for treatment of minor to moderate injuries, according to Capt. Phil Dominguez of the Murrieta Fire Department.

In addition to fire officials, tow trucks, and the California Highway Patrol, Caltrans is also on scene. Dominguez said a hazardous materials company is being called in to clean up the spill.

Traffic on the southbound side of the freeway is expected to be slow throughout the morning as crews work to clear the scene.

"We're backed up at least into Wildomar, if not further," Dominguez said.

Fuentes said he was unsure whether there would be any lanes blocked during the cleanup process, but said he expects the sluggish traffic to continue.

"Unfortunately, we can't prevent people from slowing down and staring," he said.  --Daniel Lane contributed to this report.
