Update: Lake Elsinore Man Arrested on Suspicion of DUI in Deadly Crash

A woman, also from Lake Elsinore, was riding a bicycle when she was hit by the 40-year-old local, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A Lake Elsinore man suspected of hitting a bicyclist with his truck causing fatal injuries is now facing DUI manslaughter charges, the CHP announced Monday.

The incident happened around 8:35 a.m. Sunday in the area of Grand Ave., just north of Corydon Street, according to CHP Officer Nathan Baer.

"Jay Sorrell was determined to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage," Baer said in a press release announcing the arrest.

According to the officer and coroner's reports, 38-year-old Lucia Ruano-- also of Lake Elsinore-- was riding her Schwinn 10 speed bicycle southbound on the west shoulder of Grand Ave. when she was struck.

"Jay Sorrell allowed his truck to drift onto the right shoulder and the front of the truck struck the bicyclist," Baer said.  "Sorrell applied his brakes and stopped the truck.  The bicyclist sustained major injuries.  The bicyclist was transported to the Inland Valley Medical Center where she succumbed to her injuries."

Sorrell was taken to Murrieta's Southwest Detention Center and booked on felony charges of gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI, according to jail records.   Records also indicated eh posted $75,000 bail that same day, and was released.

An August 23 arraignment date was scheduled for the man at the Southwest Justice Center, according to booking records.
