Deadly Disease Strikes Horse Facility

A total of 11 Neuropathogenic Equine Herpes Virus -1 (NEHV-1) positive cases have been confirmed.

Horse owners in Wildomar and surrounding areas may be breathing a little easier, but there is still reason to be on guard.

A deadly equine disease struck a boarding facility just west of the city and the state is monitoring the situation.

A total of 11 Neuropathogenic Equine Herpes Virus -1 (NEHV-1) positive cases have been confirmed at  in San Juan Capistrano, according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

The disease was first detected Jan. 11 and one horse was euthanized Jan. 18 as a result, the state agency has reported.

“Only the initial confirmed positive horse displayed neurologic signs and he is currently recovering. All other confirmed NEHV-1 positive horses displayed respiratory symptoms, limb edema and/or fever,” according to a CDFA update released Jan. 23.

Rancho Sierra Vista Equestrian Center remains the only Southern California location under quarantine and the CDFA reports that it is continuing to monitor the situation.
