Extremely Low Humidity Prompts Red Flag Warning

Humidity is expected to hover between 5 and 10 percent today, with "poor recovery ... tonight," the National Weather Service is reporting.

A red flag warning is in effect Friday through 4 p.m. as a result of very low humidities and gusty winds forecast for the Inland Empire, the National Weather Service is reporting.

“A surface high pressure over the great basin will bring very low humidities today with gusty northeast to east winds through and below passes and canyons and along coastal slopes this morning, decreasing this afternoon,” according to the NWS.

Winds are forecast to reach 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 45 mph, the NWS reported. Relative humidity will hit a daytime low of around just 5 percent, according to the NWS.

Although the winds are expected to decrease by the afternoon and the humidity is expected to increase to about 10 percent, the NWS is warning there will be “poor recovery of humidities for tonight,” and dry weather is forecast again tomorrow.

A red flag warning means that “critical fire weather conditions … create explosive fire growth potential,” the NWS reported.
