Kitten Evades Pit Bull Attack Then Hitchhikes Across The Desert

A man arrives at work to find a kitten stuck in his minivan's quarter panel.

Editor's Note: This is a non Lake Elsinore-Wildomar story, but locals who want to adopt this kitten are welcome to take her on:

A kitten that made the trip from Banning to Palm Springs stuck in the front quarter panel of a minivan after surviving a pit bull attack is now up for adoption at the Palm Springs Animal Shelter.

The kitten was discovered by the owner of the Dodge Minivan after he had driven to his job in Palm Springs on Monday morning, said Palm Springs police Sgt. Mike Kovaleff. Prior to driving to work, the man discovered that his minivan had been damaged by his four Pit Bulls while parked outside his Banning home. The damage, which he initially attributed to the dogs attacking a rodent or other unknown animal, included body damage and a flat tire. The man changed the tire and drove his regular 25-mile commute to work.

Upon arriving to work and discovering the kitty, the man called animal control for assistance. The kitten was rescued after 40 minutes were spent dismantling the bumper and fender of the minivan in order to reach her, according to Kovaleff.

The kitten was named Fender-Lynx.

"'Fender for the area where she was rescued from and 'Lynx' based on the Lynx-like appearance of the tufts on her ear tips," said Kovaleff. She is believed to be an American short hair tabby and around 7-weeks-old.

Fender-Lynx is recovering from her eventful day at the Palm Springs Animal Shelter where she will be up for pre-adoption on Saturday. Her adoption fee is $20, which includes her spay surgery, vaccinations and microchipping.

The shelter is located at 4575 E. Mesquite Ave. For more information, call 760-323-8151.
