UPDATE: Red Flag Warning Issued

A "fire weather watch remains in effect from this evening through Friday afternoon for strong gusty winds and marginal humidities," the NWS reported today.

12/1 UPDATE: A red flag warning signaling an increased risk of wildfire was in effect in Riverside County today.

The warning, which is scheduled to expire at 3 p.m. Friday, coincides with low humidity and strong, potentially damaging winds.

The change of weather stems from a strong upper level low pressure system that moved south into the area Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service. The agency also issued a high wind warning for the county until 2 p.m. Friday.

"Wind gusts this strong are capable of downing trees and power lines, and blowing over unsecured outdoor objects," the Weather Service advised. "These winds will also create hazardous conditions for high profile vehicles."

Visibility will be reduced to less than 3 miles in areas with blowing dust and sand, according to the agency. --City News Service

11/30 POST: The National Weather Service has issued an urgent fire weather statement in anticipation of strong gusty winds tonight across the Southland.

A “fire weather watch remains in effect from this evening through Friday afternoon for strong gusty winds and marginal humidities,” the NWS reported today.

Winds are forecast of 25 to 45 mph with gusts to 65 mph. Gusts up to 80 mph are possible through the canyons and passes. The strongest winds are expected on Thursday.

Strong winds coupled with low relative humidity ranging between 20 and 30 percent during the daytime prompted the NWS message.

However, a very cold front that is expected to move into the region late tonight through Friday could decrease the fire risk. The storm could bring higher humidities along with a chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms to the region. Mountain snow showers are also possible at the higher elevations. --Patch Staff
