Big Southwest Riverside County Employer Issues Layoffs

Abbott Vascular in Temecula, one of the area's largest employers, issued layoff notices to a couple hundred employees Wednesday.

One of Southwest Riverside County's largest employers, Abbott Vascular in Temecula, laid off approximately 200 employees this week.

The affected employees received their notices Wednesday, an Abbott spokesperson confirmed late Thursday.

"In January, Abbott communicated that it was making adjustments to improve efficiencies in its vascular work force and to better meet evolving business needs," said Abbott Spokesperson Jonathan Hamilton, in an emailed response to Patch.

The company, which employs about 3,000 at the Temecula site, had previously laid off 300 in January from the facility.

"At that time we said that there would be several hundred employees in Temecula impacted over the course of the year. A couple hundred positions in Temecula were impacted yesterday, primarily as part of the previously communicated adjustments from January," Hamilton said.

The positions affected were largely in manufacturing, he said.

Abbott Laboratories has divisions in pharmaceuticals, medical products and nutritional products. The Temecula location specializes in the company's vascular devices.

In January, the company said the layoffs were due to anticipated declines in orders for the Promus cardiovascular stent, which Abbott makes in partnership with Boston Scientific.

Abbott is offering assistance to help impacted employees, he said. This includes: consideration for vacant positions within Abbott facilities; severance benefits, including pay and benefits; and outplacement assistance in finding new positions outside of the company, he said.

As to whether more layofffs are possible, Hamilton said: "These are the actions we are taking at this time. We regularly review and make adjustments to our work force to meet the needs of the business. We won't speculate on future actions."

I had heard this several months ago from someone that works their, they are moving this operation to Puerto Rico. Government in CA needs to look at the EPA standards, workerscomp insurance rates and other items that are mandatory for an employer and start making cuts in the fees, it is ridiculous what employers pay in fees in this State to operate a business with employees, no wonder everyone is leaving here.

It's too bad about the jobs, but it's the republicans who drove the economy into the ground starting with Bush and the current republican congress doing nothing. Business as usual for them. Don't listen to their followers on this page or anywhere else. Republicans didn't even pass the job bill that Obama proposed. Do yourself a favor and BE CITIZEN enough to not look the other way and believe all the lies... we've heard them all before from the republicans, and we almost went into a depression. Don't be stupid again.

I looked at Abbott's website, and they have 30 job openings overseas. Only two openings in the states. I think they're going to have a hard time finding jobs for 500 people. BK is afraid to put his full name by his comment because he is living in the same fantasy world as Obama. His health plan and inevitable tax increases are forcing businesses out of the states. I believe most democrats have noble goals, but they can't be sustained if America is bankrupt.

What idiot would vote for Brown again? He is responsible for the fee's, rates and standards for businesses in CA the federal government doesn't have much play unless of course it is the EPA and tree huggers control it. Keep it up people, CA will be a ghost town filled with residents on welfare because there are no companies left for employment. There won't be any need to balance a budget because there won't be enough money in this once great State to balance.

@KEN: If I remember correctly, the guy I know that works there said that the operation was moving from Temecula to Costa Rica...this was about 9 months ago. He said it was an ongoing process that would take some time. Are the overseas jobs you are referring to Costa Rican jobs? Or, where?

Actually the Lady that worked for this Company was sent to Puerto Rica to set this all up, once she completed the task, her reward was to be one that was laid off.

Yes don't be stupid again by voting Obama again. Stop blaming previous administration. It's been four year under Obama administration and you still blaming the Bush administration? Wake up people. He said there will be no tax to families earning $250,000 or less. Now we have 21 taxes imposed on us. Obama broke his promise. He said he is going to cut the deficit. Now our deficit is the highest. Obama broke his promise. He said our medicare will be reduced in his term. Now we are paying more on our medicare. Look at your pay check. Obama broke his promise. Yes, don't be stupid again to fall in for a good sweet political talk. Sweet talk and sweet promises don't count. Results is the name of the game.
