If all goes as planned, the Lake Elsinore Outlets will be transformed by Spring 2014 with somewhere in the neighborhood of $5 million in renovations being proposed for the dated mall.

A presentation at Tuesday night’s Lake Elsinore Planning Commission meeting provided a sneak peak at the proposal that seeks to transform the Outlets into an ultimate shopping experience for visitors, a must-be location for potential retailers, and a revenue generator for the city.

Athena Property Management currently manages the mall and was tapped by Lake Elsinore Outlets owner Mohr Affinity LLC to come up with a design concept. Athena hired HTH Architects of Los Angeles for the job.

HTH President Mark Tweed presented his vision to the planning commission Tuesday and received a positive response to his overhaul concept, which calls for super-sized graphics to be hung at the mall, shade to be installed, areas to lounge and "hang out," landscaping and water sculptures designed to bring the 1990s center up to date. Portions of the aging mall are already being demolished to create more inviting entrances, and HTH and Athena are ready to move forward with additional renovations.

The city is currently reviewing applications from Athena for the proposed overhaul. The next step is to schedule a public hearing before the planning commission that would take place no later than June. If the planning commission approves the project, it will move on to city council for a final green light.
