Elsinore Resident Breaks Friday Night Boredom at Outdoor Reggae Concert at Temecula Winery

Trying to break out of the "bored on Friday evening rut" a Tuscany Hills resident find friendly and inexpensive fun at a locally produced music event at a Temecula Winery

Since moving to Tuscany Hills in Lake Elsinore from San Diego ten years ago my Friday evening routine has been pretty set -- sit in my backyard, have a beer with a friend or two and consider how much the palm trees and bushes I've planted over the past decade have grown.

It's not that I love watching palm trees grow at dusk, it's just I've not discovered much going on around here at the end of the week to draw me out of my Friday evening rut. I like live music but I'm too cheap to go to one of the local casinos to pay Vegas prices and sit inside an air conditioned theatre to listen to an act that no 50 year old has ever heard of.

Fortunately I recently discovered an inexpensive source of outdoor weekend fun: HeyDay Summer Events. HeyDay is a local events company run by a guy named Robert Rankin Walker. I learned about it while eating lunch at the Summerly Grill at the Lake Elsinore Golf course. A placard on the table advertised a Friday evening outdoor "Journey" concert in June.

Desperate for any Lake Elsinore Friday fun I could find I immediately bought 6 discounted tickets and looked the event up on the Internet. That's when I discovered at HeyDay.com that a whole Summer of very inexpensive events were available for me, my family and friends to get together outside on the weekend for some great music and relaxed fun.

To get a preview of what the Journey tribute concert would be like I bought tickets to last night's "Reggae Under the Stars" event which was produced by HeyDay at the Longshadow Ranch Vineyard and Winery in Temecula.

Bottom Line?

It was a ton of local fun. My wife and kids were out of town so I called my mom and we went to check it out. I bought the discounted $5 tickets on PayPal and then just gave them my name when I drove up. After parking for free we paid $15 each for our "two drink minimum" (beer and wine only) tickets and a wristband.

The concert seemed to be made up of maybe 150 or so people ranging from 4 years old to 74 with the average seeming to be in the late 20s. It was like a big picnic with a band in some rich person's really cool back yard. There were kids running around the grass, couples dancing and friends gathered around catching up on the news of the week. It was kind of like getting invited to a cool but casual wedding reception in wine country.

The music was surprisingly good. Not having heard a reggae band for 20 years I was expecting black guys in dredlocks playing a steel drum. To my surprise it was four tattooed white guys that mixed up a very dance-able mix of rock and reggae. The name of their band is DevOcean. I'd certainly go to hear them again.

Having totally enjoyed last night's event, I'm really looking forward to replicating the experience at  this Friday's "Journey Tribute" event with my Lake Elsinore and Tuscany Hills neighbors at the Summerly Golf Course.
