Flash Flooding, Severe Thunderstorms On Tap

UPDATE 3:30 p.m.: The National Weather Service says a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds in excess of 60 mph has formed near Lakeview, southwest to Perris, to 5 miles north of Lake Elsinore.

These storms were nearly stationary at approximately 3 p.m.

The weather could impact travel along Interstate 215 from Perris south to near Sun City.

Hail up to one-half inch is possible with these storms.

Thunder is being heard across Lake Elsinore and Wildomar.

A flash flood watch continues over much of the region through 11 p.m. tonight.

UPDATE 1:45 p.m.: Today's flash flood watch has been heightened to a flash flood warning in effect through 2:30 p.m. The warning applies to local mountains and deserts, as well as the hillsides surrounding Lake Elsinore and Wildomar.

ORIGINAL POST 1 p.m.: Drivers planning to commute through the mountains or deserts today are being advised of flash floods.

At 1 p.m. today the National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch in effect for Southern California.

Abundant moisture from the sub tropics and unstable conditions are producing thunderstorms in the region, according to the National Weather Service.

“These storms are capable of producing brief heavy rain and local flash flooding,” the service stated.

The areas most affected are the Apple and Lucerne valleys; the Coachella Valley; the Riverside County, San Bernardino and San Diego mountains; and the San Diego County deserts.

The watch is in effect until 11 p.m. tonight.
