Nearly 10,000 Property Owners Get Notices To Abate, 80% Comply

Of the 9,500 parcel owners who received notices, Cal Fire reports 80 percent have complied and abated their properties.

On March 30, more than 9,500 owners of vacant property within unincorporated areas of Riverside County received a “Notice of Violation and Order to Abate.”

The notices were served because the owners' properties were overgrown with weeds and hazardous vegetation that officials say posed a fire risk to local communities.

According to a May 24 statement from Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department, more than 66,000 parcel inspections were conducted by the Riverside County Fire Department Hazard Reduction Office. Of the 9,500 parcel owners who received notices, Cal Fire reports 80 percent have complied and abated their properties.

“We are truly fortunate to live in such a geographically diverse and beautiful area, but it is also very prone to wildland fires. It is our responsibility as Riverside County residents to do our part in mitigating identified hazards in an effort minimize the risk to life and property due to an advancing wildland fire. One spark is all it takes,” said Riverside County Fire Chief, John R. Hawkins. “I challenge all vacant parcel owners to remain vigilant and compliant in keeping your property hazard-free.”
