The road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. from El Cariso Village near Lake Elsinore to Antonio Parkway in San Juan Capistrano.

Ortega Highway will be closed Sunday morning for the Orangeman Half-Distance Triathlon, event organizers said today.

The road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. from El Cariso Village near Lake Elsinore to Antonio Parkway in San Juan Capistrano for the bicycle part of the event.

The 56-mile bike race will go through Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano and then along the Ortega Highway to El Cariso Village and back. Also included in the event is a 13.1-mile run on the Salt Creek Regional Trail and a 1.2-mile swim in the ocean off Salt Creek Beach Park. --City News Service and Toni McAllister

WOW! Closing the Ortega Hwy for a triathlon is a colossally stupid idea. I am an emergency responder who is expected to remain within 90 minutes of a facility in the southern San Clemente area at all times when I am on call. Closing the Ortega for something as trivial as this is a really bad idea as it negates my ability to fulfill that commitment. The ignorance of the event sponsor was demonstrated when he said previously, "that the only people impacted by this closure were people going to the beach for the day". Who is he genius that approved this closure? There must be a financial benefit.

Off course there was a financial benefit! Btw did you recieve any emergency calls while the road was closed!? Robert you need to relax man. It is admorable how dedicated you are to your job though! Peace*

Whether or not I was called to respond to an emergency isn't relevant. The issue is that if the need arose, the implication of myself and my peers not being able to respond has far reaching and long term implications for a large geographic area. Thank you though for your concern about the tension that you believe I exhibit.
