Poppy Week Remembered In Lake Elsinore

Following World War I the poppy became a symbol of the sacrifice of lives in war, and represented the hope that none had died in vain.

If you don't know Lake Elsinore City Councilwoman Melissa Melendez, she's the one handing out specially crafted red posies this week.

The week before the third Saturday in May marks Poppy Week. The annual event sees veterans and supporters handing out poppies in remembrance of those who have served in battle.

“I will be passing out poppies and collecting donations -- and hopefully will have help from several of my friends -- all this week for the American Legion Auxiliary,” Melendez said.

Following World War I the poppy became a symbol of the sacrifice of lives in war, and represented the hope that none had died in vain. The red Flanders Poppy became the memorial flower of The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.

The handmade poppies like those Melendez will hand out are crafted by hospitalized veterans. The veterans receive a small amount of money for each poppy made.
