State And Federal Government Release Unemployment Numbers; Picture Varies

Riverside county's non-seasonally-adjusted jobless rate in June, based on preliminary estimates, was 14.4 percent, compared to 13.2 percent in May, according to a state report out today.

After two consecutive months of declines, the unemployment rate in Riverside County surged back above 14 percent last month, with the bulk of job losses in leisure and hospitality, according to a California Economic Development Department report released today.

The state figures contrast with the federal government’s report out today.

Today the Bureau of Labor Statistics released regional and state unemployment numbers for June, and California saw some meager improvement.

In June, nonfarm payroll employment increased in 26 states and the District of Columbia, with the largest over-the-month increase in employment occurring in Texas and California, according to the BLS report.

Texas added 32,000 jobs, followed by California with an added 28,800, the federal report stated.

But overall, the western portion of the country saw the highest regional unemployment rate in June at 10.4 percent, with California at 11.8 percent, according to the feds.

The EDD report and the BLS report differ due to differences in statistical calculations, according to officials from both agencies.

The state ranked high in terms of statistically significant employment changes over the same time last year, however. Since June 2010, California has added 157,000 jobs to the payroll, the report stated.

The June 2011 unemployment numbers for Riverside County and its cities will be released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Aug. 3.

In May 2011, Lake Elsinore saw unemployment at 12.9 percent, Wildomar was at 11.7 percent, and Lakeland Village at 20.8 percent, according to the EDD.
