Truckers To Make More Than 300 Trips Through Busy Lake Elsinore Intersection In Coming Days, Weeks

The truckers will make an estimated 321 trips to the Tuscany Hills Elementary School expansion site in Lake Elsinore.

Traffic along Railroad Canyon Road at the I-15 is expected to be heavier than normal as truckers hauling thousands of cubic yards of fill dirt and top soil make a projected 321 trips from Murrieta to the site Feb. 28 – March 2, and again in April.

The route was approved during Tuesday night's Lake Elsinore City Council meeting.

During the meeting, City of Lake Elsinore Director of Public Works Ken Seumalo presented council members with the hauling route, hours of operation and hauling conditions. Assistant Superintendent Greg Bowers was also on hand during the meeting.

According to Seumalo, there will be approximately 18 trucks per hour along the hauling route that will traverse the I-15 corridor from Murrieta to Railroad Canyon Road, and onto Summerhill Drive. The truckers will follow Summerhill approximately 2.5 miles to the Tuscany Hills Elementary School expansion site.

Seumalo said the hauling will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday. He said dates for the April hauls have not been set yet.

City Council voted 4-0 to approve the route, hours and conditions, but council members Robert Magee and Melissa Melendez expressed concerns about traffic and potential spills.

During peak traffic hours, vehicles can back up for more than a mile along the 15 Freeway at the Railroad Canyon exit.

“This is the busiest intersection in the entire city,” Magee said. “Next time I would like to see an alternate route.”

In approving the route, council members adopted language suggested by Magee that will require the Lake Elsinore Unified School District to have a loader staged and personnel available within 30 minutes in case of spills.

“We don’t want to pay for the CHP to come out,” Magee said.

Council member Daryl Hickman was absent during Tuesday night's meeting.
