Never had cancer?

The American Cancer Society wants your help.

The organization is enrolling people who have been cancer-free in a Cancer Prevention Study-3.

Researchers hope to enroll 300,000 people nationwide -- 500 or more in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties-- who are between the ages of 30 and 65 and never have been diagnosed with cancer.

Researchers are trying to piece together the effects of genetics, environment and lifestyle factors on cancer -- and how they work together -- to affect the risk of getting cancer, said Alpa Patel, lead investigator.

Study volunteers will be followed for 20-30 years, Patel said.

This is the third generation of the cancer prevention study.

The first study, dating back to the 1950s, provided some of the first conclusive evidence of the link between smoking and cancer, Patel said.

The second generation study began in the 1980s and unlocked the field of obesity and cancer, and it continues today, she said.

But a lot has changed since the first and second studies.

People are more sedentary today than a generation ago, and there has been an explosion in prescription medications, Patel said. "With each generation, loosely speaking, we build a new study population to understand new and relevant risk factors for cancer."

Participation in the study is free.

Volunteers can have diseases other than cancer, such as diabetes and heart conditions and still participate, Patel said.

At the time of enrollment, volunteers will have their waist circumferences measured and give a small blood sample. They also will be asked to complete a survey.

After the initial visit, they will be mailed a survey every couple of years to be filled out at home, she said.

Appointments must be made in advance to enroll.
