Assemblywoman Melendez Introduces "Power to the People" Program

"Power to the People" will recognize five people a month in the community of significant achievement and service.

Every month we will be recognizing people in the 67th Assembly District of significant achievement or service to the community. This is the first month we are recognizing these extraordinary citizens. These are people who aren’t seeking a spotlight for their achievements, but rather working every day to make a difference in people’s lives without recognition.

Every month the honorees will be listed on my web-site: http://arc.asm.ca.gov/member/AD67/.

Heather Schott - Special Education Teacher at Dartmouth Middle School in Hemet

Heather brought the ‘Yes I Can’ program to Dartmouth Middle School, making it the first middle school in the Hemet Unified School District to have the program. Yes I Can at Dartmouth follows a curriculum to teach students about leadership as well as different types of disabilities, such as Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and Down Syndrome.

Sally Myers - 20 Years as Founder and Director of the Chamber of Commerce Student of the Month Program

The Student of the Month program was born of Sally Myers' passion for education. Sally is partner and Marketing Director of BMW Management, Inc., which is an independent franchise of Sizzler Restaurants. Sally recognized the need for a venue honoring the outstanding students in Lake Elsinore, Murrieta, Perris/Menifee, and Temecula and has devoted many hours of her time to that end.

F4-RV - Owners Rory Smith and Sarah Letts-Smith

Rory and Sarah Smith are the owners of F4-RV and give free RV rentals for returning deployed military veterans to go on vacation with their family. Often times veterans don’t have the disposable income to take their family out for a vacation after returning from a deployment. F4-RV provides a great service to military families in the community while operating a great local small business. To find out more about F4-RV visit their website at f4rv.org

Dorothy Craton - Manager of Second Hand Treasure (Part of St Martha’s Catholic Parish)

Sales from the store go to purchase and offer food for 540 families a week in the area. Giving back to the community is something we should all be doing, and Dorothy Craton makes it her life.

AJ Matheson - Six year old Nicolas Valley Elementary School student

AJ organized a toy drive with his parents at the racetracks and collected more than 80 new toys and two bicycles to donate to the California Highway Patrol’s CHiPs for Kids for underprivileged children over the 2012 holiday season. Congratulations to AJ and his parents for helping so many underprivileged kids during the holiday season.
