SERVICE ANIMALS

"MARINE MAX"
"MARINE MAX"
THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, WWW.DOJ, UNDER THE ADA/SERVICE ANIMALS HAVE ALL THE LAWS PERTAINING TO SERVICE ANIMALS. YOU CAN  COPY/POST THESE LAWS.  IT IS IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO KNOW THESE LAWS, THE FINE FOR DISCRIMINATING AGAINST A DISABLED PERSON WITH A SERVICE ANIMAL CAN BE QUITE HEFTY. YOU ARE GOING TO START SEEING MORE SERVICE ANIMALS IN THE FUTURE.  RETURNING VETERANS THAT HAVE BEEN INJURED  ARE TEAMING WITH SERVICE ANIMALS TO HELP THEM WITH THEIR DISABILITIES( SERVICE ANIMALS  ALSO HELP PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH P.T.S.D.)   I KNOW IT IS DIFFERENT TO SEE AN ANIMAL  IN AN  ESTABLISHMENT  THAT USUALLY DO NOT ALLOW ANIMALS, BUT THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO BE EDUCATED ABOUT SERVICE ANIMAL LAWS. I AM DISABLED AND I HAVE A SERVICE ANIMAL, MARINE MAX.  MAX IS ALWAYS WITH ME, HE IS MY PARTNER AND I DEPEND ON HIM TO LOCATE SOUNDS FOR ME.  HERE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT THE LAWS  FOR SERVICE ANIMALS.  DOGS ARE THE ONLY ANIMALS RECOGNIZED AS SERVICE ANIMALS (MINITURE HORSES TOO, BUT YOU DONT SEE MANY MINIITURE HORSES). WE ARE NOT  REQUIRED TO HAVE VEST ON OUR SERVICE ANIMAL.  THERE IS NOT A "CERTIICATE" OR "PAPER" FOR SERVICE ANIMALS AND IT IS ILLEGAL TO ASK THE DISABLED PERSON  TO PROVIDE DOCUMENTATION FOR HIS ANIMAL. A BUSINESS\/EMPLOYEES CAN ASK TWO QUESTIONS WHEN A PERSON ENTERS THEIR BUSINESS WITH A DOG  "IS THAT A SERVICE ANIMAL" AND IF PERSON SAYS YES..."WHAT TASK DOES YOUR SERVICE ANIMAL DO FOR YOU?"  A DISABLED PERSON WITH A SERVICE ANIMAL  IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING SURE THE ANIMAL IS LEASHED(UNLESS THE LEASH INTERFERES W/ THE TASK  THE ANIMAL IS DOING), THE DOG IS NOT DISRUPTIVE TO OTHERS AND ALL OTHER UPKEEP OF THE ANIMAL.  A BUSINESS IS NOT ALLOWED TO SEGREGATE THE DISABLED PERSON  FROM OTHERS. THE ANIMAL IS JUST AN "EXTENSION" OF HANDLER AND SHOULD BE TREATED LIKEWISE.   WE SPEND ALOT OF MONEY TRAINING OUR SERVICE ANIMALS AND WHEN MAX IS OUT IN PUBLIC HE IS WELL BEHAVED AND HE IS ALWAYS CONTROLLED.  ALWAYS ASK IF YOU CAN PET THE ANIMAL , REMEMBER THE DOG IS WORKING.  MAX LOVES TO INTERACT WITH PEOPLE AND HIS JOB ISNT INTERRUPTED IF SOMEONE WANTS TO SOCIALIZE WITH HIM.   I HOPE THIS HELPS TO INFORM  READERS ABOUT THE LAWS PERTAINING TO SERVICE ANIMALS.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH BOTH OF YOU...I TOO GET UPSET WHEN PEOPLE BRING IN THEIR PETS, THAT ARE NOT SERVICE ANIMALS. I REALLY GET FRUSTRATED WHEN THE ANIMAL ISNT LEASHED OR ACTS UNRULY. IT IS ACTUALLY AGAINST THE LAW TO CLAIM YOUR PET IS A SERVICE ANIMAL WHEN HE OR SHE IS NOT. JUST SO YOU KNOW...IF A SERVICE ANIMAL IS BEING DISRUPTIVE, UNRULLY, ARGRESSIVE OR OUT OF CONTROL, THE BUSINESS IS ALLOWED TO REFUSE SERVICE, I HONESTLY HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY SERVICE ANIMAL ACT INAPPROPRIATE OR BEHAVE POORLY IN AN ESTABLISHMENT. MAX AND I ARE AWAYS ON THE GO I TAKE MAX TO CONCERTS, DRAG RACING EVENTS,RESTAURANTS,COURT ETC. AND NOT ONCE HAS HE BEEN OUT OF CONTROL. MAX IS ALWAYS GROOMED AND WEARS A SHIRT, GROOMING IS A MUST BECAUSE MAX IS AROUND FOOD ESTABLISHMAENTS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR POST

Kelly, Glad you are one of the good ones that do not cheat the system. Hope our politicians will pass some laws to get the bad ones out of the stores and shops. When my husband was in the hospital we had a couple come with their service dog and it really raised his spirits. Bless you.

Anyone can buy a vest on ebay and claim its a service dog. This law needs to be tightened up. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR7.TRC1.A0.H0.Xservice+dog+vest&_nkw=service+dog+vest&_sacat=0&_from=R40
