Baby Boomers Need Work

Baby Boomers deserve to be hired, as they have a better work ethic, experience, and can be relied upon.

How many of us have become unemployed in the past few years?

How many of those unemployed have been hired for a job?

Is it a good job?  I myself have been looking for a job since I was laid off about three years ago from a good job in the construction industry.

Most of us know that construction is the first industry, in a bad economy, to go down.

It is also the last industry to improve when the economy gets better.  I’m not here to complain about the construction industry.  I’m here to complain that I cannot find work in any industry.

I’ve been working since I was 17 years old.

I have never had trouble getting hired in any industry.  Going into an interview, I always had the attitude that the job was mine.  I usually got the job I set out to get.  Well, today, I wish I could say the same.

What’s changed?  True, I’m not a young woman but I still have the same good work ethic.

I remain honest and reliable.

I take pride in a job well done. The change?  I’m a "Baby Boomer."  I have gray in my hair.  I can see it on the faces of the interviewer as soon as they see me.

They all want a younger employee perhaps to mold into their vision of the perfect employee.

But the older prospective employees have already been trained to follow rules, have experienced many situations and know how to respond.

We have a good work ethic, which I hear is hard to find in younger people these days.

I’d like to see the older people get an even break.

The older people have mortgages and families to support.  The younger, and I mean young as in just out of college, still live with their parents.

No mortgage yet.

Their biggest worry is who to party with on Friday night.

Yet these are the people who are getting hired; Little to no experience, hired to do a job where an experienced worker can do the job faster and better than their young counterparts.

What’s wrong with this picture?

There, thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

I am still looking for a job.  I’ve been trying to reinvent myself. Is it working? Not yet.

I have no capital to start a business of my own. All of my money is going toward my bills, mortgage, food, etc.

I have little left.

Can someone share a successful formula that helped him or her?  I’m running out of answers and money.
