As the school day began Thursday at Lakeside High School, a few students were allegedly engaging in illegal activities off campus.

The tip that these teens may have been doing something outside the law came Dec. 11 when the Lake Elsinore Police Department’s School Resource Officer Unit received information alleging that students were involved with drugs in a nearby residential area, according to a report from sheriff’s Sgt. Ken Chaffin.

So Thursday at approximately 7:45 a.m., the officers followed up on the concerns.

Chaffin reported officers spotted a parked vehicle in the 3500 block of Eisenhower Drive with five juveniles inside.

“Several of the juveniles were smoking cigarettes when contacted,” Chaffin reported.

Three of the kids were in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Chaffin alleged.

“They were subsequently arrested and released to a parent,” he added.

The names of the students were not released due to their age.

Truthful, they are kids who are breaking the law. They need to be held accountable.

Sarcasm...hmmm... Let me see, there were 5 kids ditching school, smoking cigarettes, and had dope with them. If they were under 18 they shouldn't have cigarettes, let alone marijuana. So it isn't a big deal that they are truant, smoking cigarettes, and have dope on them? The fact that they were stupid enough to make a big enough scene that a citizen called the police doesn't make you think that they were up to no good? Sheesh! I have read the rantings of some of you on here and just let it go, but I am now drawn into it myself. Either enforce the laws and hope that the younger generation gets their "stuff" together and become productive citizens, or just let it all go. I would love to see the grades of these 5...not likely to be doing particularly well I suspect. That's ok...we have lots of social programs to help support them once they drop out of school and get onto the system... Ok...I am stepping down from the soap box...please resume you pigheaded bickering everyone. (Not meant at the two that have commented previously...just in the normal handful that gripe and complain here on the Patch.) You can now flame me for getting this off of my chest!

Really you gotta use the N word!?? I have high school kids on my street every morining before school starts, and yes they are smoking cigarettes and pot. I have called several times, they don't need to be going to class stoned, do it after school! Also, the kids got busted by the deputy that was already being paid by the school district to arrest the kids. That is why they are on campus, to bust kids for things they shouldn't be doing. @ Truthful- Do you really think there was a crime that was more worthy on campus?

I am glad that someone got involved and called the authorities. If we want to make changes around here and create an environment that is healthy to raise our kids in we all need to be involved. THEse are kids we are talking about and they need guidance. We should not ignore this type of thing we need to address it for the sake of our kids. It takes a village folks....

They need to go give the faculty of the school a random drug test and then you will see how deep in the system this goes. Not saying it is ok that the kids were doing what they were, but it is no surprise and nothing that kids did in the seventies. Our last three presidents have smoked weed and two have done cocaine., and lets not get started on the Kennedy's before them. Just keeps going and how do you stop the machine?
Local hero December 15, 2013 at 01:34 AM
Sorry ,screwed up sentence about seventies.Should have said that it was nothing the kids didn't do in seventies. Just saying there there are no saints in the city. Do you really think you know half the stuff your kids really do?

We are Americans, we are educating a bunch of idiots who think they don't have to earn their way. We are Americans, a 2nd rate nation full of drug addicts and lazy potheads who could care less about future Americans. Offended? Don't be, it's the truth. Mandatory drug testing for all Faculty, Students & Welfare, WIC, Unemployment etc. and yes I'm drug tested randomly for drugs in the private sector.

Its a sad day whem so many people have been desensitized to blatant, out in the open drug use by kids! Instead of giving kids consequences for their behavior, parents and teachers let them walk all over authority. Everywhere I go kids are spouting the f word . Some teenage girl in my neighborhood started twerking when I drove past her in my car. And the way they talk! Oh my goodness! Since they are too dumb to get even the lowliest job, they will start stealing in order to buy drugs or make their rent payment.

Its a really sad time we live in where our children are being raised by TV, daycare and parents who can't be, or aren't around. Kids were smoking weed before school when I was a kid too, the difference was we were getting out butts whooped when we got caught, and there were actual consequences. Unlike today where these kids will likely get a slap on the wrist, and their PARENTS will be fined and (depending on the parents) they will not make the kids accountable for anything. My parents took my car away and made me get a job when I did something that cost them money...and there is nothing worse than busting your a** for 6 months and having to give every penny you earn away, plus keep your grades up. So hopefully the parents of these kids will step it up a notch and make efforts to raise these kids into productive members of society, even if it takes an as* whoppin', a job and accoutability on the kids part...if not, welp, looks like we will be welcoming in (or not) the next generation of criminals blatant with no regard for anything.

You know, parents need to step up to consequences when their children are young, very young. Kids need to know boundaries and parents need to be consistent. Some parents wait til the kids are 'tweens or teens to be truly parents. By that time it's too late.
