UPDATE: 3 Separate Incidents, 3 Pedestrian Deaths

The reports serve as a bloody reminder to all residents.

The Riverside County Coroner’s Office is reporting three pedestrians killed by motorists Tuesday in three separate, unrelated incidents.

Although none of the tragic events occurred in Southwest Riverside County, the reports serve as a bloody reminder to all residents.

The first incident was reported in Palm Springs on S. Palm Canyon Drive, shortly before 5 p.m. An 84-year-old woman from British Columbia, Canada, was crossing in a dimly lit area when she was hit by a burgundy 2003 Kia Sedona.

Harriet A. Beichman was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:01 p.m., according to the coroner's office.

The driver cooperated with investigators, police told The Desert Sun.

The next incident was reported at approximately 8:20 p.m. Tuesday on southbound Cathedral Canyon Drive near Hillcrest Road in Cathedral City.

Seventeen-year-old Daniel Matus of Cathedral City was fatally struck by a truck, according to the coroner's office.

According to Cathedral City police Sgt. Julio Luna, a man was driving a Dodge Ram truck south struck the boy who was in the road. The motorist stopped to help the boy and called 911, Luna said.

"As he waited for police to arrive, the driver was assaulted by an unidentified male," Luna said. "The suspect then took the Dodge truck and fled from the area."

Police later found the truck in the 31500 block of El Pueblo Trail. Jose Matsu, 19, of Cathedral City, was arrested and identified as the suspect who allegedly stabbed and carjacked the motorist who struck the boy, Luna said.

The driver of the truck was stabbed once and transported to Desert Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Luna said no criminal charges were anticipated against the motorist for striking the teen, noting that alcohol did not appear to be a factor.

Matus was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:36 p.m. Tuesday, the coroner's office reported.

Then at 8:54 p.m., a 20-year-old man was fatally struck by an SUV on Perris Boulevard, just south of Filaree Avenue, in Moreno Valley.

Edward Pattio Jr. of San Bernardino died at 10:43 p.m. Tuesday after being transported to Riverside County Regional Medical Center, according to the coroner's office.

Not shocked at all! Almost hit a kid on a bike while going to Costco! He had no reflectors, wearing all black and had ear phones in! I have a feeling we will be reading about more if parents don't educate the kids to wear bright colors at night and not to remove the reflectors off their bikes!
