UPDATE: Camp Pendleton Fire Downsized To 500 Acres

Fire suppression efforts continue Sunday, and residents can expect significant smoke plumes due to unburned heavy brush within the fire perimeter, Welsh reported.

9/16 UPDATE: The estimate on the number of acres charred by the fire burning on Camp Pendleton has been downsized to approximately 500 from 1,000, a base official is reporting.

1st Lt. Ryan Welsh, who is providing online updates for the community, is now reporting the Camp Pendleton Fire Department and mutual aid assets have stopped the fire's rate of spread to the northeast and southeast.

One fire that began Friday during a training exercise at approximately 12 p.m. in the Quebec Impact Area of the base has burned approximately 1,000 acres as of 5:30 p.m. Saturday, according to 1st Lt. Ryan Welsh, who is providing online updates.

The growth of the fire in the northern areas has slowed significantly and containment is at 30 percent, according to Welsh's report.

Heavy smoke will remain visible throughout the evening as previously unburned pockets within the fire perimeter burn, according to Welsh.

There are no reports of any injuries or damage to any structures, and there is currently no threat to any structures on base or in the surrounding communities, according to Welsh.
