Cleveland National Forest Hiker Rescued

The lost hiker was located around 8:15 p.m. Monday.

A 61-year-old Orange County man who became separated from friends and lost his way during a Memorial Day hike in the Cleveland National Forest was back home safe today thanks to the work of a Riverside County rescue team.

Kevin Meehan of Laguna Beach became stranded around 1 p.m. Monday when he lost track of his companions in a section of the forest just northwest of Lake Elsinore, according to the sheriff's department.

Meehan called 911 and was told to remain where he was while members of the Riverside County Mountain Rescue Unit were assembled and dispatched to the scene, said sheriff's Sgt. Chad Loeffler.

He said rescuers remained in contact with the lost hiker throughout the afternoon and located him around 8:15 p.m., escorting him out of the wilderness to safety.

Paramedics treated Meehan for abrasions he suffered during the ordeal, and then he returned home, according to Loeffler.

The sergeant said the incident highlights the importance of preparedness, which means a "well-thought-out travel plan shared with friends and family, as well as familiarity with common hiking equipment ... proper clothing and plenty of water."
