UPDATE: Crash Closes Bundy Canyon In Wildomar

The crash was reported at 4:57 a.m. just east of the 15 Freeway.

An early morning crash Wednesday on Bundy Canyon Road in Wildomar forced the street’s closure.

The two-vehicle crash was reported at 4:57 a.m. just east of the 15 Freeway at Oak Canyon Drive. At press time, Bundy Canyon is still closed in both directions.

Two people were trapped in the wreckage and were rescued by Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department personnel.

Both victims were transported via ground ambulance to the hospital; one suffered major injuries, the other had moderate injuries, according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department.

According to Deputy Albert Martinez of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, investigators are onscene reconstructing the crash. The road is scheduled to reopen at approximately 12:30 p.m. today.

Martinez said it was too early to say what may have caused the crash.

I hope for a speedy recovery for the victims of the crash. But, if the crash happened at 5am, why is the road still closed?

I drive that stretch of Bundy Canyon, between the 215 and the 15 on a daily basis. With the huge amount of crazed maniac drivers on that road, its a miracle more people don't crash.

Mark and Jess -- I share your concern on that lengthy road closure. Will update the story when/if we get new info.
Diana August 08, 2012 at 05:56 PM
Bundy Canyon needs to be upgraded to a four land road, as much traffic as it gets from commuters from the 15FWY and 215 FWY there is no excuse why it remains like it does. My employee uses this road to get to work from Menifee and was turned around, then he tried Newport it was closed, then he jumped on the 215 to Clinton Keith, the bridge is closed, needless to say he went back home. This is ridiculous all these two lane roads with all the people that live out here now. Wishing a speedy recovery to those that were involved in this accident.

Bundy canyon is a dangerous road period. Given the average person can't drive well, it's not a safe drive.
Sandy August 08, 2012 at 06:51 PM
If people would learn how to drive on Bundy Canyon Road the road would not be so dangerous! Try driving the Posted speed limit...what a concept??? I live off Bundy Canyon and am amazed at how most drivers think it is a speed way. I for one do not want it developed into a 4 lane road. That would just be stupid and lead to an even more insane amount of traffic.
Kc August 08, 2012 at 06:57 PM
I get Passed by motorcycles with on coming traffic over the double yellow all the time. People wonder why motorcycles have a bad rep.
Jess August 08, 2012 at 08:06 PM
What do motorcycles have to do with anything? You know lane sharing is legal in the state of California.
D August 08, 2012 at 08:12 PM
City of Lake Elsinore says there was a fatality in the accident. The road is closed for the investigation.
Jess August 08, 2012 at 08:18 PM
That"s a shame but I figured there was. The road usually doesn't get closed unless there is a fatality. That is sad news.

I passed accident this morning just a moment or two after it had happened before any emergency response team had arrived. Very Glad to see all survived. Wondering why....this accident was already off to the side of road at 5:00 am why did it take so long to open Bundy and why the need to even close the road entirely?? over 6 hours??? Bundy is in need of an upgrade. I agree too many people drive way to fast and also there are the line huggers that ride the center of the line.
Constant Comment August 08, 2012 at 08:30 PM
Not when they cross the double yellow and actually go into "on coming traffic".
Jess August 08, 2012 at 08:32 PM
Very true, but don't categorize all motorcyclists just because of one or two that made a bad impression on you.
Tina Tyra August 08, 2012 at 08:41 PM
I live right there and that stretch of Bundy is blood alley. People go WAY too fast and they hit that curve and it's all over. Several accidents there over the past year. The place where they came to rest was the site of an accident not long ago where a woman and her dog were ejected after another woman went to sleep at the wheel and hit them head on at midnight. This would be a good place to station an officer now and then. Everyone needs to SLOW down. We can't get out of our tract because there is no light and people are going 80-90 mph. When you pull out, you take your life in your hands. Just try to teach a teen to drive and pull out into that traffic and you'll know true terror. The city could use the money from the citations and there would be plenty if someone was there to monitor the situation.

Gee thanks Jess....love it when people jump to their own conclusions. I don't categorize anything & nobody made a bad impression on me. I am a 'motorcyclist'. Kc was talking about dangerous motorcyclists that go into "on coming traffic". Thats why I was very careful to use the quotation marks there. You asked what motorcycles had to do with anything & that sharing a lane is legal. I was only making the distiction between his "on coming" part & your "sharing a lane" part. The only bad impressions i get are when people jump to their own conclusions that weren't really said/written/implied in the first place.
Jess August 08, 2012 at 08:55 PM
Wow, little bit of an overreaction there huh? Someone having a bad day? Poor thing. Step away from the keyboard man. I apologize, I did not realize that you were not the same person that had made the first comment. Relax.
Constant Comment August 08, 2012 at 08:59 PM
Just explaining things to you Jess.....one sentence at a time. Perhaps next time you won't be so quick to jump to conclusions about what you judge other people to be thinking. Your apology is accepted.}~)
Jess August 08, 2012 at 09:00 PM
Lol, gee thanks.
Kc August 08, 2012 at 10:48 PM
Not at all. I ride a motorcycle to work every day. Passing going up bundy canyon over the double yellow & squeezing in right before oncoming traffic is out of control. Most, not all, people who ride motorcycles are complete idiots. I brought it up because the discussion was about how dangerous bundy canyon is.
Kc August 08, 2012 at 10:51 PM
& I do categorize most motorcyclest as bad apples. Only a few deserve to be on the road.
c moore August 09, 2012 at 02:05 AM
I agree, bundy canyon road needs to be a 4 line hwy. I don't know if it went through, but a builder wants to build a new tract along The Farm, something like 200 homes. Geezz, they put a tract in there and it really will be a mess. and you know, they'll only fix the road along that stretch. I pray that those in the accident are ok, and will recover.
Mark Friis August 09, 2012 at 01:32 PM
Wrong answer. Traffic studies show the more lanes you add the faster traffic becomes. What is needed is traffic calming methods to force people to slow down, road diets, traffic circles and so on. The easier you make it for people to speed the more likely they are to do it. There is a great book out there called "Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We do" that examines situations such as these.
Morgan August 09, 2012 at 04:32 PM
I agree... I drive Bundy from Menifee to drop my kids at my gma's everyday before and after work. I don't know how many times I have been passed on a blind curve by some fool who thinks he's Mario Andretti because I'm doing the speed limit. If people would drive the posted limit and pay attention to what they are doing this wouldn't be a topic of discussion.
Diana August 09, 2012 at 04:37 PM
Mark, I so disagree, I have lived in this area for over 30 years and lived off of Bundy Cyn for 10 of those years. There is way to much traffic on this road, the road can not handle this amount of traffic, winding curves, narrow lanes and a straight shot from the 15 FWY to Meniffee road make it dangerous for those turning off of Bundy and for those coming on. Widen this road with turn lanes and a place for trucks to be in a slow lane would help a great deal. Impatient drivers will always be, if it were four lanes then the slow divers would have somewhere to be and also prevent head on accidents because someone got out of their narrow lane, not to mention during rainy season all the mud that pours off of the hills onto this road which gives no one a place to go. It is not about people learning to drive it, it's about this road was not made to handle the traffic that it has now. Try work traffic on Menifee stop sign, lined up past Wright Road taking over 30 mins to get through it.
Anthony August 09, 2012 at 06:41 PM
I for one am not about to let a traffic light dictate my life! If its Red and no one is coming I'm gone! simple as that! Living life by my own law!.
Lisa H August 15, 2012 at 05:32 AM
That's fine Anthony just don't hit my husband running that light because he would pull you out of that car!!!!
menifee mommy August 24, 2012 at 01:25 AM
Thank you everyone who helped me the morning of the crash i am a single mom of 3 coming home that morning when i was hit the driver of the other car was uninsured and unlicensed and a very lengthy criminal record, and im just waiting to see if alcohol or drugs were a factor with what he did and will absolutly let everyone know. But he was driving very fast and as do i take that road home for the last 13 years to get into menifee but never in my wildest dreams would have ever thought this would strike me or my family. Its like those stories you hear on the news if this person was still in jail an innocent person wouldnt be facing a horrible fate. I am home now recovering i should hopefully be able to walk they say in a few months. I was in an induced coma for 2 days, suffered a broken femar which they put a rod in it. A broken foot , broken wrist and they stapled my other knee back together. Im just happy to be home with my kids and feel fortunate that this is all my kids had to indure which is more then there hearts could handle at there age and should never have to deal with what had happend. Lifes a journey and the only thing i thought about were my kids. They have been so helpfull with me at home i was sure hopeing that i wasnt going to need there help like this until i was soooooooo much older. Thank you for your concern sincerly the menifee mommy

KC Me and my man have been riding motorcycles for many years, we have ridden as far as South Dakota and Washington. Not all Motrocycle riders are "idiots", when we ride we are extra aware of our surroundings and use extreme caution. Drivers of cars scare me worse then Harley riders, some of those are the idiots, like the dumb ass the caused this accident.
Diana August 24, 2012 at 01:45 AM
Menifee Mommy, so happy that you are home safely with your kids and recovering from your injuries. So sad that this happened, I wish you a speedy recovery.
Danielle August 27, 2012 at 02:05 PM
