Deputy Who Shot Man In Lake Elsinore Returned To Duty

Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Martha Rodriguez has been returned to active patrol duty.

A female deputy who parking lot has returned to duty.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Martha Rodriguez has been returned to active patrol duty after she was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a department investigation into the shooting, according to sheriff's Cpl. Courtney Donowho.

Rodriguez has served eight years as a peace officer with the department, Donowho said.

At approximately 8:40 p.m. on June 20, Rodriguez in the parking lot after an altercation broke out.

The incident at the Four Corners Albertsons lot located at 30901 Riverside Drive occurred after a witness -- who saw a dispute between Marhoun and a woman believed to be his mother  -- flagged down Rodriguez for assistance.

When Rodriguez confronted the pair, Marhoun "became combative and attempted to disarm the officer," Donowho said.

, at one point during the altercation Marhoun punched Rodriguez and grabbed her baton before she shot him.

Witnesses report three shots were fired by the deputy, with at least one wounding Marhoun in the torso.

Cal Fire and American Medical Response ambulance responded to the scene, and Marhoun was transported to a local hospital for his injuries. He was arraigned on a charge of resisting an officer, with a sentence-enhancing allegation of having a prison prior within the past five years.

Rodriguez was not injured during the incident, Donowho said.

Marhoun was in court today, but the hearing was continued after a defense motion was granted for a mental health evaluation.

A new hearing was scheduled for the end of August. Marhoun remains in custody with his bail fixed at $30,000.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is also investigating an early-morning

of Lake Elsinore was shot by a Lake Elsinore Sheriff's Station deputy in the 16300 block of Clement Street near Lakeshore Drive.

According to a department report, Fernandez was pulled over for a vehicle violation and allegedly tried to ram the officer with the stolen truck he was driving.

Fernandez died days later after being shot in the head by the deputy.

The deputy was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a department investigation.

According to Donowho, there is no word yet on whether the deputy has returned to work.
