Dozens of Drug Arrests Made at Music, Arts Fest at Lake Skinner

Dozens of people were arrested and booked on drugs charges while attending the 2013 Lightning in a Bottle music festival at Lake Skinner this weekend, sheriff's officials announced Tuesday.

The event-- which attracted an estimated 15,000 people each day between Friday and Sunday-- was staffed by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department for security, according to Sheriff's Lieutenant Jason Horton.

Federal DEA officials were also at the event, and helped the sheriff's department conduct and undercover operation to catch a number of people selling a variety of drugs, including: cocaine, ketamine, LSD, marijuana, MDMA (ecstasy), methamphetamine, PCP, psilocybin and various prescription narcotics, according to Horton.

"Specifically, Riverside County Sheriff's Department personnel, in conjunction with members from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and the state Alcohol and Beverage Control office, detected numerous participants engaged in criminal acts including activity associated with the intent to possess and sell illegal drugs," Horton said.

According to the lieutenant, law enforcement officers posed as parties interested in buying illegal drugs, and then arrested those who supplied them.

"Teams from the Sheriff's Department along with DEA, and ABC were able to solicit the sales of illegal drugs and immediately took those responsible into custody, seizing the illegal drugs involved," he said.

Horton added that "significant quantities" of the illegal drugs were seized as a result of the total of 58 arrests made.

Most of those arrested were facing charges of "sales of a controlled substance," but police records also indicate one person was caught allegedly trying to steal a vehicle.
