Florentino Garcia, who lives next door to where the shooting took place, said he began hearing yelling and shots fired around 1:30 a.m. -- nearly an hour before deputies arrived.

“I didn’t think anything of it,” he said. “People around here sometimes have parties and sometimes there is gunfire. It sounded like a pistol,” he said.

Another resident, who lives more than two blocks away from the shooting scene, said he too heard the shots, but said he didn't think much of it because the area is notorious for gunfire, especially during celebrations.

But at least one resident reported the shots to police.

Deputies allege that when they arrived on scene sometime after 2:17 a.m., they tracked the gunfire to one of the RVs that Hanley was in and ordered him outside. When he exited, police say he was armed with a shotgun and fired at police.

“The suspect raised the shotgun in a threatening manner toward the deputies, refusing orders to put the weapon down,” according to the report from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff's Station.

By 4:30 a.m., the shots were loud and rapid, Garcia said.

“Bam, bam, bam,” he said. “It sounded like they (the bullets) were hitting metal. At least a dozen shots – maybe more – were fired. I was so nervous. I never heard anything like that.”

According to the police report, Hanley fired one round in the direction of the deputies, and the gunfire was returned.

Garcia said he saw Hanley being taken off the property on a gurney, and the suspect had two bullet wounds: one in his arm and one in the torso.

Police have described Hanley’s injuries as non-life-threatening; there were no other injuries reported during the shooting.

Garcia said “Barry,” as Hanley is known in the neighborhood, is an older bearded man who has been living in one of two RVs parked on the 11th Street property.

“He is real quiet, keeps to himself,” he said. “We never had any trouble with him.”

It’s unclear if anyone had been inside the RV with Hanley, and whether he had been the one firing the shots prior to the deputies’ arrival.

The 1.25-acre property where the shooting took place is located in semi-rural area; horses and other farm animals are kept in the neighborhood. In addition to the two RVs, the shooting site also houses a large garage, two homes, and a shed. According to Garcia, the property owner rents out the spaces and approximately 14 people, including young children, live on the site. Hanley was one of the renters, according to Garcia.

As of 3 p.m. Monday, investigators were still on scene; 11th Street was blocked at Tereticornis Avenue.
