Drug Deal Gone Bad Led To Shooting Near Freeway, Police Say

Two of three suspects who allegedly gunned down a man at a Corona intersection during a drug deal gone bad were being held without bail today.

Joseph Perry, 22, and his 19-year-old brother, Jhavionn Rayshawn Perry, were booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on suspicion of murder after being transported from the Corona Police Department this afternoon.

The brothers, along with a 16-year-old boy being held at juvenile hall in Riverside, are suspected of killing 25-year-old Brian McKnight of Riverside during a confrontation that occurred about 3:25 p.m. Wednesday in the vicinity of McKinley Street and Griffin Way, just off the Riverside (91) Freeway.

Corona police Sgt. Kim Velasco alleged the brothers and teen -- whose name was withheld because of his age -- and McKnight met at the Corona location "for an alleged illegal drug transaction."

"During this time, the victim was robbed and shot twice," Velasco said.

She said officers arrived moments later and discovered McKnight unconscious and witnesses performing CPR on him. The victim was pronounced dead at Riverside Community Hospital.

The three suspects fled the scene but were spotted by a Corona police officer on the westbound 91.

Velasco said the officer attempted to stop the SUV, but the driver sped away, heading north on the Corona (71) Expressway. The driver eventually stopped near Euclid Avenue in Chino, and all three occupants surrendered without incident, according to Velasco.

She said a handgun was located inside the vehicle. --City News Service
