DUI Checkpoint Tonight in Lake Elsinore

The sheriff's department says they'll be out checking for unlicensed and impaired drivers.

Lake Elsinore police plan to staff a driver's license/DUI checkpoint tonight in town, police announced.

The operation is planned for an undisclosed location in the city limits, according to Sheriff's Sgt. Peter Giannakakos.

"DUI checkpoints are a proven enforcement tool effective in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes," he said.  "Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough."

According to the sergeant, Lake Elsinore police have investigated 39 DUI collisions in the last year  Sixty-two people were injured in those crashes, he said.

"Additionally during this time, the Lake Elsinore Police Department made over 173 DUI arrests," Giannakakos said.

Funding for Friday's operation is provided by state and federal grants.
