UPDATE: Fatal Crash Shuts Down SR 74

The accident was caused by an 18-year-old driver who ran a red light, according to the CHP.

12/9/11 Authorities have identified the victims. for the story.

A fatal crash on SR 74 at Riverside Street -- reportedly caused by a teenage motorist who ran a red light -- forced the closure of the highway for nearly two hours Thursday afternoon.

The crash involving a 2007 Honda Accord and a 2004 GMC Sierra truck was reported about 2:20 p.m., just east of the 15 Freeway on the edge of Lake Elsinore city limits.

According to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Jerry Sawasaki, the gray Accord was struck by the white GMC, driven by an 18-year-old woman.

The teenager ran a red light at Riverside Street as she traveled east on SR 74, the sergeant said.

According to eyewitnesses, the teen didn't appear to brake and collided with the driver's side of the Accord as it turned left onto westbound SR 74 from Riverside Drive, Sgt. Sawasaki said.

The Accord driver was killed in the crash. There was one passenger in the Honda but there was no word on extent of injuries.

A report on the teen's condition was unavailable.

No identities had been released at press time.

The sergeant said further investigation was needed to determine if speed was a  factor in the crash.

Eyewitnesses estimated that the truck was traveling between 55 and 60 mph, the sergeant said.

At press time, it was not clear whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.

"It's still too early in the investigation," the sergeant reiterated.

The eastbound side of SR 74 was shut down at Riverside Street and traffic was backed up into Lake Elsinore for nearly two hours. Vehicles were being directed onto Riverside Street.

One lane on the westbound side of the highway remained open during the crash investigation, according to a Patch reporter on scene.

The name of the person killed was withheld pending notification of kin.

I was driving to get my boyfriend from work yesterday, and saw the Honda and knew there was a fatality and my heart sank. Then i look on here and see that and 18 year old girl ran a RED light-__- because she had a job interview? wow i'm 18, i've had to drive friends to the hospital and never disobeyed driving rules and i've been driving for 2 years 3 months no tickets no accidents BECAUSE i obey the posted signs BECAUSE i don't want to cause an accident or take someones life for inconsiderate driving. Shitty driver's should be punished to the fullest extent of the law, i hope she gets a FAAAT fine and maximum sentence for vehicular man slaughter, and gbi. I hope she feels guilty everyday of her life and hope it eats her up, because she had to be careless. And i most defiantly send my prayers out to the FAMILIES&FRIENDS of the victim who lost his life and the woman whos still fighting for hers, I would also like to apologize on behalf of my generation because 98% of them are disgusting excuses for human beings.
Jay May December 09, 2011 at 09:41 PM
Marcus i hope your family presses charges and i hope you guys push for the maximum sentence, she ran a stoplight for a JOB interview-_____- it wasn't an accident she consciously chose to run it. My prayers do go out to you and the families affected.I'm sorry for your loss and hope your sister pulls through.

I am so sorry for this family and also for the 18 year old that has to live with this nightmare the rest of her life. I hope that all drivers read this and think about their driving skills, they text while driving, talk on their cell phones, drive way to fast and are very careless, you are not 12' tall and bullet proof think about what your doing when you are behind the wheel you are not the only driver out there. We have some REALLY bad drivers in our area...........slow down nothing is that important.

Someone @ the accident said that she was texting @ the time of the accident, hopefully this is not so, these young drivers in Lake Elsinore need to slow down & pay closer attention to JUST DRIVING!
Carla Hurley-Brown December 10, 2011 at 07:03 PM
Jason was my first cousin. I only had two first cousins left; Jason and Greg, and now there's only one. Our family here in Dayton, OH are truly devastated, because we loved him soooooo much. He had said that he was coming to visit for Thanksgiving and we were looking forward to it, but he changed his mind. My daughter had purchased an airline ticket last month to visit him this coming Wednesday. So, I guess she'll have to settle for a funeral. Jason was the only house guest I've had that I never wanted to leave. He was so funny and kept us in stitches and he was so incredibly neat and clean. But, that's how we were raised. I remember how long it would take him to iron his clothes. ; ) This is like a bad dream. Thank you to everyone who tried to help at the scene, to the one's who are praying for our family and to all who loved him and Phyllis. She was a sweetheart too. If anyone has information on how to contact Greg, we'd appreciate it. We are on the other side of the country and it makes it very difficult to do things. And Kasanrah, let's hope that at the age of 18, that the worst mistake of your life is already behind you now. Everyone will make the worst mistake of their life and we all want and need to be forgiven, therefore, I forgive you and if you don't know the Lord, make it your priority.

Carla, I don't wanna sound insensitive, but the union has obligations that his children can claim if he has any....those of us who have worked with him are devastated....and all we know is that Jason didn't have much family....but if he has CHILDREN y'all need to let that child know to contact the union.....We all are praying for Phyllis's recovery and are seriously mourning the loss of our brother and friend....I pray that your family can get through this. And I must add....that I pray that the young lady who was driving that truck, and her family can find a way to deal with this.....I agree she should be prosecuted to the fullest extent....but I pray that God gives her and her family strength as they move through it
Rosie December 11, 2011 at 07:06 AM
My heart goes out to Jason's family....I have worked with him a few times....such a sweet and great guy......I'm sure the driver is extremely sorry for her actions.....my heart is with her too because she has to live with this for the rest of her life. Please people be careful out there we all have family who we love and who loves us and they just want us to come home to them safely

I just received this information and am extremely heartbroken! Part of me wants to lash out at the young lady that has caused all of us including herself such misery. Nonetheless, if you know Phyllis that’s not her personality, she is a justified woman with dignity and integrity and would suggest to all of us to let God fight her battles. I did not know Jason very well; however on the few occasions when I was in his presence he was a man of honor, humor and really loved Phyllis and the family. I know that he had a relationship with the Lord so he is now in a better place resting in his father’s arms. For all of you that believe in God and truly love Phyllis let’s pray and fast (deny yourself for someone else) for a speedy recovery in her physical body and in her heart. Robert & Shontay McCall

I am so sorry for the family and friends of the victims. I was also a person who stopped to help. I tried to help him breath along with the R,N that stopped. Everyone was so worried and even though we are all stranger we all tried our best to help them both, but i wish i could of done more. I feel so bad that our attempts where useless. I am an MA, but after this i dont think im cut out for the job. Im sorry! My prayers are with u all.

Words can't express how hurt I am at the loss of my friend Jason, I still can't believe he is gone, I will truly miss him. I'm praying for his family as well as Phyllis family. Life is certainly too short, cherish it while you can.

I'm sorry for your loss, other people's mistakes and sins cost us deeply at times. The Lord sees all things and knows all things. I know this horrible accident will be used as an example for several families that live in Rosetta Canyon. Keep your eyes open on 74, it's dangerous.

Sad. Now, investigation...who is this teenager and where are her parents? Ctizenship status? Resident Alien? Criminal Alien? (Illegal entry?--Criminal) Nearly every country on Earth would deem this information important... There is a malfunction here and innocents are dying in the street.
