UPDATE: Fire Breaks Out In Corona

A downed power line may have triggered the fire, but authorities were also investigating reports that children playing with flammable materials could be responsible.

A fire Wednesday on a Corona golf course just south of the Riverside (91) Freeway scorched about an acre and came perilously close to nearby homes before firefighters got it under control.

The non-injury blaze erupted around 3:45 p.m. at Paseo Grande and Hummingbird Lane, on the edge of city limits, according to Lynn Mata of the Corona Fire Department.

A downed power line may have triggered the fire, but authorities were also investigating reports that children playing with flammable materials could be responsible, Mata told City News Service.

"Children were seen fleeing the area, so we're looking into that," Mata said.

Four engine crews, numbering around 22 firefighters, worked for a half- hour before fully containing the blaze, which at one point reached the back fences of several residences, though the properties were not damaged. Corona fire units were assisted by personnel from Cal Fire, Mata said.

Along with Corona police, Riverside County sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers assisted with crowd control and street closures, as well as standing by in case evacuations were necessary.
