Sgt. John Samano said investigators have been alerted to various scams in the past two months that have netted "large sums of money" from local residents and businesses.

According to Samano, people should be inherently suspicious of any letters or email messages claiming that they have won a lottery, or need to immediately send funds to help liberate a family member locked up abroad.

Samano said other scams also request that the targeted individual "wire" or "ship" money to a certain location in order to receive a prize.

"Be cautious of telephone solicitors asking for donations," the detective said. "Deal only with charitable organizations that you have proven to be legit and reliable."

Anyone who believes they've been victimized by a scam artist should contact their local police department.
