A drunken driver who plowed into a mother bicycling near her Lake Elsinore home -- killing her on the spot -- was sentenced Friday to 10 1/2 years in prison.

Jay Dustin Sorrell, 40, pleaded guilty last month to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving on a suspended license, with great bodily injury allegations, in the June 30, 2013, death of 38-year-old Lucia Ruano.

Under the plea agreement, the Riverside County District Attorney's Office dropped a second-degree murder charge in exchange for Sorrell's admissions to the other counts.

Superior Court Judge Judith Clark certified the plea deal and imposed the sentence stipulated by the prosecution and defense.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Ruano was riding her bicycle south on Grand Avenue, near Corydon Street, around mid-morning when Sorrell ran into her from behind in his 1999 Ford F-150 pickup. He was going around 40 mph and had a blood-alcohol level of .16, investigators said.

Sorrell told authorities that he was on his way to grab donuts for breakfast and never saw the victim, who was on her way home, less than two miles away.

The mother of three daughters was pronounced dead at the scene from major blunt force trauma to the head and other body parts.

According to the CHP, Sorrell had allowed his pickup to drift onto the right shoulder of the roadway.

At the time, Sorrell had two prior misdemeanor DUI convictions -- one from Arizona and another from Nevada.

"major blunt force trauma to the head". Could a helmet have saved her?

One time someone turning left pulled in front of me but it was 10% my fault 'cos I didn't have my lights on and it just turned dusk. 30 minutes before sundown.

It doesn't matter, a helmet wouldn't have saved her.

Nancy, why don.t wr take away drivets license permantly like Germany does - great idea in my opinion, but we are so dependent on cars and all that goes with it- gas, highways etc, - corporate interests related to driving have a monopoly. - no alternative way to get around, while Germany uses bus, train, metro, bicycle oh and FOOT transportation. we cannot take away the sacred car + license without people shouting about an alternative . . .
