Lake Elsinore DUI Crackdown Nets One Arrest; Efforts Continue Countywide Through Holiday Weekend

Four arrests were made Thursday night in Lake Elsinore as police cracked down on drunken driving.

The arrests came during a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint that was set up at the Central Avenue and El Toro cutoff intersection.

Robert Templeton, 39, of Newport Beach, was arrested for driving under the influence.

Three others were nabbed at the checkpoint for outstanding warrants.

During the operation, 2,012 vehicles passed through the checkpoint and 121 were stopped for screening, according to a Lake Elsinore Police Department report. Thirty-four vehicles were stored or impounded for 30 days, and 36 unlicensed and suspended drivers were sent to court.

Sixteen people were given field sobriety tests, the report stated.

Checkpoints will continue throughout undisclosed locations across the county as the Memorial Day holiday weekend gets underway.

Beginning tonight and running through Monday evening, “the Lake Elsinore Police Department will be fielding extra police officers to conduct enforcement in a multidisciplinary effort to make this holiday season safe and enjoyable for all,” the police report stated. “Residents can expect to see a pronounced increase in the presence of uniformed officers throughout this holiday weekend. Officers will be on the lookout for thieves, shoplifters and burglars.”
