UPDATED: 'Mission Fire' In Jurupa Valley Destroys 40 Vehicles, 4 Homes, 11 Outbuildings

UPDATE JAN. 14, 2014: As of 10 p.m., the Mission fire in Jurupa Valley is now 100 percent contained, according to officials.

Preliminary damage assessment includes 11 outbuildings, 40 vehicles (most of which were under repair or salvaged), three motorhomes, four residential structures and two damaged structures.

No civilian injuries were reported, however one firefighter sustained non life-threatening injuries, according to a report from Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann.

The American Red Cross set up a shelter at Patriot High School, 4355 Camino Real in Jurupa Valley, to assist those displaced by the fire.

ORIGINAL POST: Evacuations are underway as firefighters battle a blaze in Jurupa Valley that has already burned structures, vehicles and vegetation.

The wind-fueled fire, dubbed the Mission fire, broke out Tuesday morning and has destroyed at least one home and other buildings, according to officials. 

Firefighters were sent to the 5900 block of Mission Boulevard at 10:36 a.m. on a report of a fast-moving blaze involving structures, "multiple vehicles" and vegetation.

Local residents, commercial buildings and the Rubidoux Child Care Center at 5765 42nd Street were evacuated, Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann reported.

A number of power lines were reported down in the area, but no injuries were reported.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported that seven to 10 structures caught fire. A man told a broadcast reporter at the scene that he narrowly escaped before flames engulfed his home. He said a neighbor had alerted him to get out.

Mission Boulevard was closed at Pacific Avenue, and 90 firefighters were sent to the scene, Hagemann said.

An evacuation center has been set up at Patriot High School, 4355 Camino Real in Jurupa Valley. 

West Riverside Elementary School has been evacuated. Students were being taken to Mission Middle School at 3600 Packard Street. 

Southern California residents are being asked to take precautions as a Red Flag warning remains in place through Wednesday.

Wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour will buffet the Inland Empire and mountains of Riverside County today, meteorologists said.

In addition to the strong Santa Ana winds, warm and dry conditions have heightened the chance of wildfire in the county, according to the National Weather Service.

A red flag warning issued by the agency on Monday is to remain in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday. A red flag warning is the weather service's most serious fire-related warning.

The Inland Empire and mountains will also see sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph out of the northeast and a low daytime humidity level of around 5 percent today, an NWS advisory said.

The agency also issued a high wind warning for the Inland Empire and mountains until noon Wednesday. A high wind warning is issued when hazardous winds capable of causing property damage are occurring or expected.

"The winds will make driving difficult, especially for motorists with high profile vehicles," an NWS advisory said. "Watch for broken tree limbs and debris on roadways."

Neither warning extended to the Coachella Valley. --City News Service contributed to this report.
