More Details Emerge In Wildomar Shooting

The Wildomar man who was shot by police Tuesday night after he allegedly fired on a father and son, has been identified.

Richard Mount Jr. sustained non life-threatening wounds after he allegedly fired on the man and his minor child in the 24000 block of Mercer Lane in Wildomar.

According to Riverside County Sheriff’s Sgt. Lisa McConnell, Mount lived at the Mercer Lane residence.

A woman, identified as the minor child’s mother, was at the home Tuesday night when the boy’s father drove there to drop his son off around 7 p.m., McConnell said. Unconfirmed reports indicate she may have been Mount’s live-in girlfriend.

The father and son parked in front of the residence and honked the vehicle’s horn in an attempt to get the attention of the mother, reported McConnell.

Within a short period of time both father and child stated they heard what sounded like gunshots and saw what they believed to be muzzle flashes coming from the side of the residence, the sergeant said.

"Believing they were being shot at, they immediately fled the area and contacted law enforcement,” she said.

Police were called and a perimeter was set up around the area.

With the assistance of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department helicopter, attempts were made to contact the home’s occupants via telephone and a public address system, the sergeant said.

“All attempts failed to get a response … ,” she said.

McConnell said deputies observed movement and lights turning on and off from inside the residence and more shots fired from within.

Sometime after 10 p.m., Mount came outside the home through the front door holding what police say “appeared to be an assault-style rifle.”

Believing the suspect was going to shoot at them, two deputies from the Menifee Police Department fired on the man, McConnell said.

Mount sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds from the deputies’ rounds and was transported to Inland Valley Medical Center for treatment; he was later booked at Southwest Detention Center for assault with a deadly weapon, the sergeant said.

At press time, there are no jail records available on Mount.

The woman eventually exited the residence without incident and was detained, according to the sergeant.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department S.W.A.T. team was called in to search for additional victims or suspects, but none were found and law enforcement began clearing the Mercer Lane area around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Per Riverside County Sheriff’s Department policy, the two deputies who shot Mount have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
