Muriatic Acid Spill Causes Traffic Tie-Up In Lake Elsinore

A bottle of muriatic acid that was dropped from a vehicle at the intersection of SR 74 and Cambern Avenue in Lake Elsinore caused traffic delays Wednesday.

The spill was reported at 11 a.m. and was expected to be cleared out by 12:30 p.m., according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department Battalion Chief Phil Rawlings.

It's unknown who dropped the chemical.

The chief said the muriatic acid, which is used by pool maintenance workers, had to be neutralized into saltwater as part of the cleanup process.

Deputies from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff's Station were on hand to control traffic during the cleanup.

At press time, Cambern was closed to northbound traffic at SR 74.
