The victim was driving a 2007 Hyundai Azera in the #1 lane of the southbound I-15 at approximately 70 mph when he was struck from behind by a 1999 BMW 5 Series driven by 28-year-old male driver from Montebello, according to a report released by spokesman Travis Monks of the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at approximately 4:05 p.m., according to Monks.

The Montebello man "failed to decrease his speed prior to colliding into the rear of the Hyundai. As a result, the Hyundai spun out of control until it collided with a call box on the right shoulder and overturned," the report continued.

Smyth was wearing a seatbelt and was not ejected from the wreckage, according to the coroner's office.

Smyth was transported to Inland Valley Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries at 11:15 p.m. Sunday, according to the coroner's office.

The Montebello man sustained minor injuries and was also transported to the same hospital for treatment, Monks' report said.

This collision is currently under investigation, according to the CHP report.

The CHP report had indicated Smyth's residence was in Murrieta, however the Riverside County Coroner's Office has reported he lived in Wildomar.
