UPDATED AT 8:07 a.m.: An aircraft that reportedly crashed Sunday morning, west of the Wildomar/Murrieta/Temecula area in De Luz, turned out to be nothing more than a "loud bang."
According to preliminary reports, the crash site was near Calle Colina and Carancho Road. The area is in rugged terrain, near the San Diego/Riverside County line, just east of Camp Pendleton. The reported crash site was believed to be on the Riverside County side.
The plane was reported down around 7 a.m. Sunday. Weather conditions in the area today include heavy fog and light rain.
Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department were on scene looking for the crash site. But after more than 30 minutes of combing the area, it was determined that a neighbor just heard a loud noise and the search for a downed plane was called off.
It's unclear what caused the noise but Camp Pendleton officials Friday advised that a weeklong series of live artillery training started Saturday.
