Police Say This Guy Brought a Knife to the Party

A Lake Elsinore man is suspected of attacking someone with a knife when he tried to break up a fight, sheriff's officials reported Tuesday.

Riverside County Sheriff's Sgt. Linda Maria Hughes says 29-year-old Johnathan Schmidt is suspected of stabbing a man in the 31000 block of Riverside Drive, near Lakeshore Drive, around 11:10 p.m. Sunday.

"The altercation occurred when the victim attempted to stop a fight involving others at the establishment when he was cut with a knife," Hughes said.

Schmidt then apparently took off in a green Ford Explorer SUV, but was spotted a short time later in the area of Grand and Bryant, according to the sergeant.

"Officers detained suspect Schmidt who was in possession of a knife," Hughes said. "During the course the investigation it was determined that Schmidt had attacked the victim and several others at the establishment."

The man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, and was booked into the Murrieta jail.  Jail records indicate he posted $25,000 bail and was released Monday.
