A Moreno Valley man wounded by a sheriff's deputy for allegedly steering his car toward him, sparking a chase through southwest Riverside County to San Diego, was behind bars, a deputy said.

Someone called 911 at 10:35 p.m. Wednesday to report a disturbance in the 23800 block of Hemlock Avenue in Moreno Valley, and a deputy was dispatched.

Dispatchers alerted the responding deputy that the suspect, Dejon Edwards, 27, had an arrest warrant for domestic violence, Riverside County sheriff's Deputy Armando Munoz said.

When the deputy pulled up, he found Edwards sitting in a vehicle with the engine running and asked him to turn it off, talking to him until back-up arrived. Edwards allegedly started his vehicle again, put it into gear and ignored warnings to turn the engine off, Munoz said.

When Edwards drove toward the deputy, he fired two shots, Munoz said.

As Edwards fled south, his suspect and vehicle description was broadcasted to surrounding law enforcement agencies.

His vehicle was spotted on Interstate 15 by California Highway Patrol officers, for whom he allegedly refused to stop, leading them on a chase that ended at a San Diego gas station in the 3700 block of Murphy Canyon Road.

U-T San Diego reported that Edwards was treated for a gunshot wound to an arm.

Edwards was booked on suspicion of felony evading, resisting arrest and on the warrant, Munoz said.

Riverside County jail records indicated Friday that Edwards was being held at Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside in lieu of $100,000 bond. Pending arrest charges included a domestic violence warrant, obstructing/resisting/evading police, reckless driving, driving without registration, a license or insurance, speeding in excess of 55 mph and providing false identification.

The deputy involved in the shooting was uninjured and put on administrative leave pending a use-of-force investigation, Munoz said.
