Smoke From Camp Pendleton Fire Hits Valley

Are you smelling it?

Smoke wafting over the Valley is coming from a controlled burn on the northern portion of Camp Pendleton, base officials have reported.

"The purpose of the ... burn is to reduce fire fuels in training areas northeast of the San Mateo area to the Camp Pendleton boundary with the Cleveland National Forest," according to a Camp Pendleton public affairs office statement.

The burns began Wednesday and are now scheduled through Sunday, base officials said Thursday.
