Smoke Near Ortega Highway Coming From Controlled Burn

The blaze was started at approximately 8 a.m. and is expected to burn through 4 p.m. today.

The U.S. Forest Service has confirmed that smoke spotted west of Lake Elsinore and Wildomar today is coming from a controlled burn.

The prescribed fire is burning off the Ortega Highway at Long Canyon Road in the Cleveland National Forest, according to a USFS dispatcher.

The blaze was started at approximately 8 a.m. and is expected to burn through 4 p.m. today.

Firefighters aim to burn 43 acres, according to the dispatcher.

Earlier this week, the USFS burned approximately 20 acres in the same area.

The USFS dispatcher said controlled burns are expected to continue through the spring months, but scheduling them is day-by-day, depending on weather conditions and air quality.
