Temporary Shelter Opens and Closes at Murrieta Valley High School

The shelter was for residents that might be displaced during the Volcano Fire.

A temporary shelter set up by the American Red Cross earlier this afternoon has already closed.

The shelter, which opened around 4 p.m., was at Murrieta Valley High School. According to the Riverside County Fire Department, it closed before 6:10 p.m.

The shelter was for potential evacuees from the Volcano Fire. Cots, blankets, and water were available, and food was to be brought in if necessary.

“This is typically what Red Cross does first,” said Lynda Shoemaker earlier this afternoon. “We set up an evacuation center. It gives people a gathering place, a place where they can hang out until they can get up to their homes. Plus, we always feed them. If it’s necessary and the winds become erratic, we turn it into a shelter where people can stay. The other thing is, they get information here. Fire knows that we’re here, so they communicate with us.
