Thief Makes Off With Wildomar Church Donations, Police Say

The sheriff's department is warning churchgoers to audit their bank accounts for any signs of identity theft.

Sheriff's officials are investigating a recent theft from a Wildomar church, in which someone made off with a week's worth of donations.

According to Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Pauling, the theft happened at Saint Francis of Rome Catholic Church on Lemon Street sometime before April 15, when it was discovered.  The theft wasn't publicly disclosed until Tuesday.

"This theft was from congregation donations made between April 07, 2014, through April 13, 2014,"  Pauling said.  "Taken in the theft were cash and personal checks."

Now, officials are warning parishioners who donated money via personal check to audit their bank accounts "...for any signs of identity theft," according to Pauling.  Those who may find something wrong with their accounts are asked to contact the investigator handling the case at 951-245-3357.

Patch contacted the church for comment on Tuesday, who said they can't discuss the case while it's being investigated.
