Two Alleged Car Thieves Arrested in Lake Elsinore After Hiding From Police

A random license plate check in Lake Elsinore led to the arrest of two alleged car thieves, a sergeant said Saturday.

A sheriff's deputy on patrol early Friday spotted a Toyota pickup truck at a Central Avenue gas station and ran a plate check. Records showed the vehicle had been reported stolen in Menifee, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. David Cardoza said.

The pickup was stopped, and two suspects ran behind a nearby LA Fitness health club as the deputy approached them. A perimeter was set up and the men were found hiding behind a retainer wall at the intersection of Dexter Avenue and Third Street, Cardoza said.
